- What are the responsibilities of an employer?
An employer is responsible to provide a set wage rate and clear working conditions. As an employer, you are also responsible to deduct all relevant income taxes, employment Insurance, Canada Pension Plan, and abide by your provincial labour laws, medical coverage and worker’s compensation board regulations.
- How long does the Labour Market Opinion take and who does the application?
The Labour Market Opinion usually takes approximately 3 - 4 weeks to process from the time you register with Service Canada. We will assist you in the preparation of the documents as well as the employment contract that is required from Service Canada.
- How does your agency select the caregivers?
Caregiver applicants go through a rigorous application and selection process based on a set of agency criteria, which usually includes the fulfillment of requirements set forth by Citizenship and Immigration Canada for language, education and work skills. Then, they are thoroughly screened, including checks for police/criminal clearances, education history transcripts, and prior employment history references. Once the screening process is completed, we will then interview them by phone or video conference. We will only select quality, caring, skilled and dedicated caregivers, who truly believe in our mission to provide the best care possible.
- What if I can’t find a suitable caregiver, how many choices do I have?
As demand to participate in the Live-In Caregiver program is high, there is usually a good pool of caregivers registered with our agency to select from. If the first group does not meet your expectations, we will arrange a second group for you to interview. We always advise our clients to be as honest and detailed in their application as to what their requirements and expectations are, so that we can best meet your needs and the needs of your loved ones.
- How long will the hiring process take?
For locally selected caregivers, the process will take anywhere from a few days to a week or two, depending on your requirements, and also depending on your availability for an interview. For a foreign caregiver, it will generally take about 3-4 months depending on the country they are applying from.
Currently, due to the low availability of local full-time live-in caregivers, especially in the area of nannies, many foreign caregivers are hired to fill these positions. Thus, it is best to begin the selection and application process as soon as possible.
- How will JM Homecare Agency assist us, and what assurances do we have?
JM Homecare Agency is here to assist you throughout the whole process, from the very beginning stages, till the arrival of your caregiver. Our agency believes in making sure your caregiver is given full support and that his/her works permit application is expedited. Our support does not stop with the employers. We truly believe in assisting both sides of employment. We assure you that our agency will provide you with all the information that you need, answer any questions which you may have, and give you undivided support in order to make this process a smooth, speedy, as well as rewarding one.
- What if we are not happy with our caregiver? What if he/she quits?
Based on our experience, the majority of employment situations, which don’t work out, are due to lack of communication by both parties. Most caregivers are not used to voicing out their opinion or relating their concerns, which could be due to cultural differences. We always request that employers be tolerant, understanding, and open a line of communication between them and the caregivers.
With that said, if you and the caregiver for any reason do not work out, we guarantee all our employers with a 3 month replacement for local caregivers and 6 month replacement for foreign caregivers. Within 72 hours, we will find you a new selection of caregivers for you to interview. We will place you on our priority list so no time is wasted. If the caregiver quits within that time frame, if needed, we will find a temporary caregiver to assist you and your family till your new caregiver arrives.
- What kind of support do you provide caregivers?
We believe that by supporting the caregiver, we are supporting the employer. How so? For starters, we assist the foreign caregiver with the application process so their work permit application is expedited. We also provide them with travel assistance, if needed. When they arrive, we help them integrate seamlessly into Canadian culture, providing them with a surrogate family to buffer the culture shock. We also offer applicable job-related courses in order for them to enhance their skills, and services to counsel them in other related areas. Essentially, we take the burden off of their shoulders so that they can care for you and your family needs! Our desire is that each JM Homecare caregiver is happy and comfortable in their new host country, enabling them to better themselves and provide quality care for you and your loves ones.
- What is the rate of pay for the caregiver?
A caregiver’s monthly salary depends on the province and territory of residence and employment. It is generally anywhere from $1387 - $2200 Canadian per month. To find out more, please contact us.
B.C. minimum rate is $8/hr, monthly salary would be $1387. You are allowed to deduct up to a maximum of $325 for room and board.
- What do I need to know about payroll deductions? Do I deduct the room and board before or after income tax deductions?
We can assist you with any payroll questions or if needed, we are able to provide you with that service for your convenience as most employer are not comfortable with tax deduction, tax remittance, T4 or Record of Employment. Federal income tax laws require that employers provide the caregiver with a monthly detailed pay slip, remit all applicable tax deductions and provide a T4 slip at the end of the year. As per current income tax legislation, room and board is considered a taxable benefit. Therefore, the employer is required to deduct room and board after applicable tax deductions (provincial, federal, EI, CPP, etc.) are deducted from their pay slip.
We understand that you have a busy schedule, your happiness is time well spend together with your family and love ones. We are here to help you lighten your burden. If you have other needs and for any reason we are unable to assist you, we will help you find the right solution, and direct you to the right source.
At JM Homecare, we truly DO care.
